For any bride one of the most exciting times in planning is dress shopping! Many woman have been dreaming about wearing a wedding dress since they were a little girl. Now while some are excited about dress shopping, others may not be! Here are just a few tips on choosing a wedding dress!
Budget: It is important to establish a budget before you go dress shopping. You do not want to get to your appointment and start trying on dresses that are $5,000 and you know you cannot afford that. Save yourself the heartbreak of falling in love with a dress that you cannot afford and stick to the budget you decided before you started shopping. Keep in mind there is a dress out there for EVERY budget!
Picking the Right Place: There are so many places to choose from when you decide it is time to start looking for "the dress". Make sure you do your research and look at reviews of places you want to visit. Starting early is key on dress shopping. I recommend starting your search at least nine months in advance. You want plenty of time for the dress to be ordered and allow ample time for alterations. Most bridal salons can work on a short time frame but rush charges may apply. If you are looking for a specific line or designer be sure to visit the shop's website or call to make sure they have the line or designer you are looking for. Making an appointment will ensure that there is an available bridal consultant for you. If you pop into a bridal salon on a Saturday they will most likely not have anyone to assist you. This is supposed to be the perfect experience for everyone so make sure you choose the place you think will give you the best experience.
Style: The styles of wedding dresses have drastically changed over the years. We went from poofy sleeves to dresses that hug our curves. No matter what style of dress you are interested in there is SO much out there to choose from. I always tell people to go into dress shopping with an open mind. Our bodies are all so different and unique. You may think you found your dream dress in a picture, then you put it on at the store and you hate it! This happens all the time. I encourage everyone to try on many different styles so you can truly say you looked at all styles and this one is your favorite for YOU. You would be surprised how many people go into it saying they want a big princess ballgown and come out with a hip hugging mermaid gown!
Comfort: Even though you will only be wearing this dress for one day, it will be a long day! When you are choosing a wedding dress think to yourself "Am I going to be able to wear this for 10+ hours?". When you are out dress shopping the sample dress you try on will most likely not be in your size so it will be hard to see the true fit. Just keep your comfort in mind when you are choosing a size to order. Also, do not commit to losing 30 pounds to fit in a certain dress size. You will stress yourself out so much if you have to worry about fitting in a dress as well as dealing with wedding planning stress! I recommend ordering a size up so you have room if you do end up gaining weight (nothing is wrong with that! We all need some comfort food when dealing with wedding planning). It is always better to have to make alterations on a dress that is too big than a dress that is too small. Last, be sure that you can sit in your dress. This is something I forgot and it was so uncomfortable to sit down in my dress. You may need to leave a little room so you can comfortably sit down.
I hope these few bits of advice help you on your hunt to "Say yes to the dress!".
